Ergenekon: Progression or Regression?
INTRODUCTION
Ergenekon is the name of the most important legal investigation process in
Turkish history. Under the Ergenekon investigation, two former generals and
many retired high-ranking military officers were arrested on the grounds of
aiming to overthrow the ruling Justice and Development Party. Given the fact
that Turkey already experienced "three and a half coups" in 1960, 1971, 1980
and 1997 respectively, the arrest and investigation of generals for the fist
time in the history of the republic is in itself a very significant
development. Furthermore, the fact that the investigation is taking place
during the rule of a government at least partially outside the secular,
pro-military tradition increases the importance of the Ergenekon case for
Turkish polity.
This special issue will be one of the first systematic analyses of the
Ergenekon case. It will offer an introductory overview of the case for
international readers as they seek to understand this highly complex topic.
The issue will then set out to provide a comprehensive analysis of the case
for Turkish democratic politics, civil-military relations, secular-Islamic
cleavages and wider party politics ? particularly its myriad of political,
cultural, and economic dimensions. It will be composed of analyses of the
Ergenekon case itself and studies of its broader ramifications for Turkish
politics and society.
TIMEFRAME
Abstracts of no more than 300 words are sought that address these issues.
Please email them to the convenors by the end of September 2009. It is hoped
that these will make up the basis for a workshop to be held in May 2010 and
a submission to a major international journal later that year.
