*Update August 12 After the collapse of the Soviet Union, students of the
Russian empire, Muslim societies, nationalism, and ethnic relations have
clearly demonstrated that the Volga-Ural region is one of the richest fields
in which a variety of entanglements concerning these crucial issues can be
observed. In other words, the Volga-Ural region stands at a crossroads of
Eurasia, inviting students of various disciplines while being open to
comparative studies. Our workshop aims at: 1) integrating the different
methodologies of historians from Russia and abroad, and elaborating new
ones; 2) looking back at the Russian empire (the Ottoman, Soviet and other
empires concerned) from the vantage point of the Volga-Ural region; 3)
investigating into the networking of peoples that promoted the
deconstruction of existing borders, the creation of new contact zones, and
the imagination of various communities; 4) tracing the transformation of
links between Muslim and national identities within the region and beyond in
the course of the turbulent twentieth century.
