Forthcoming Edited Volume: Survey of the Sociology of Islam & Muslim
Societies
By Tugrul Keskin & Gary Wood, Editors
Dear Colleagues,
Today, Islam is a system of social organization within Muslim Societies that
includes one-fifth of the world's population and is the world's fastest
growing religion. The contribution of Islam to world civilization is
undeniable, however in the last one hundred years, Muslims have been faced
with all of the effects of modernity, caused by the emergence of capitalism
and its ramifications. What does modernity ultimately mean for Muslims, and
how will the historical precepts of Islam meet with changes in our
globalized world?
In this book, we will attempt to look at and understand Islam through the
Sociological Imagination and as such, we perceive Islam as the main element
of the social structure of Muslim Societies. The sociology of Islam examines
the role of Islam within Muslim Societies in a globalized world in the
context of ongoing and increasingly powerful and neoliberal economic
processes. In this process, Muslim understanding of secularism, modernity,
state, collective identity, immigration, Islamic political thought and
economic life are shaped by the forces of globalization and new market
conditions. However, this is a mutually constitutive process. Islam also
influences the West and its perceptions toward Islam because of the
interdependent relations caused by the global economy. These
interdependencies create both social and political transformations on both
sides. However this process is not unique; in fact it is quite similar to
the impact of the Industrial Revolution in 19th century Christian Europe.
At the Southern Sociological Society annual meeting of 2007 in Atlanta and
2008 in Richmond, Virginia we organized nine panels on Islam and Muslim
Societies. We are now preparing for the publication of an edited volume on
the Sociology of Islam and Muslim Societies focusing on the social,
cultural, political, economic and religious aspects of Muslim Societies and
modern Islamic life. We invite submission of articles and chapters to be
considered for this volume.
Those who would like to contribute can send us their proposals or abstracts
(300-500 words) and articles (7000-8000 words) on or related with, but not
necessarily limited to the following topics:
Islam, Modernity and Secularism
Islamist Movements and Collective identity
Islam and Muslims in Europe and US (Migration)
Islamic Political Thought & Social Policy
Islam and Economic Life (Capitalism and Neoliberalism)
We will be pleased to receive articles on these and similar topics
concerning the Sociology of Islam and Muslim Societies.
