Dear colleagues,

The European Journal of Turkish Studies editorial board is pleased to
announce the publication of the journal's latest thematic issue (no. 6,
2007), entitled 'Ill-literate Knowledge'. Please see http://www.ejts.org/

Edited by Marc Aymes, this new issue bundles up several articles in French
and English, so as to address the question of illiteracy in today's and
yesterday's Mediterranean and Middle Eastern worlds. Be it through a study
of oral archives, alphabets on the move, low-key self-narratives, gagged
minorities or polyglot communities, the aim is to explore alternative forms
of knowledge that eschew the established 'logic of writing' ? in a nutshell,
to wobble literate certainties. Hence the notion of an hyphenated
'ill-literacy', conceived so as to leave room for a trouble with the
authenticity of letters.

Contributions to this issue include:
- Marc AYMES, "Introducing 'Ill-literate Knowledge",

- Birol CAYMAZ, Emmanuel SZUREK, "La Révolution au pied de la lettre.
L'invention de 'l'alphabet turc'",

compétences linguistiques des derniers Ottomans",

Government Employees in the Late Ottoman Empire: Workers at the
Seyhülislâm's Office" (full text forthcoming soon),
