THE COSTUME SOCIETY SYMPOSIUM 2008
DRESS AND PERFORMANCE
CARDIFF 11- 13 JULY
The Costume Society symposium is the forum for recent academic research
into all aspects of dress history and contemporary dress.
Our 2008 Symposium will be held in Cardiff at the headquarters of BBC Wales
with accommodation at University of Wales Institute Cardiff, directly
opposite the BBC. Rooms are en suite in flats of eight with a communal
kitchen.
All meals will be taken at the BBC restaurant.
Cardiff - the capital of the Principality of Wales - is Europe’s fastest
growing city. Cardiff has much to offer in theatre, music and the
performing arts with the renowned Wales Millennium Centre, St David’s Hall,
the New Theatre and many smaller venues. It is only two hours drive time
from London and Cardiff International Airport is just 12 miles from the
City Centre. The exciting waterfront of Bae Caerdydd, Cardiff Bay, is alive
with restaurants and bars and the City’s shopping area has every known High
Street and many individual boutiques.
Keynote speakers will be:
John Bright - Oscar winning costume designer and founder of Cosprop.
Sean Crowley - Head of Theatre Design, Royal Welsh College of Music &
Drama.
Rosemary Harden - Curator, Bath Museum of Costume.
Jenny Tiramani - International Theatre Designer and Dress Historian.
CALL FOR PAPERS
The theme of the symposium is DRESS AND PERFORMANCE covering every aspect
of theatre, film, dance and re-enactment. We are looking, as ever, for high
quality presentation of new research in the field of costume.
We would be particularly interested to receive papers from lecturers and
students from relevant academic fields, museum curators, conservators,
designers, garment technicians, collectors, scholars and those engaged in
the reproduction or interpretation of historic dress for re-enactment or
performance.
Papers will be allocated 30 minutes; illustrations can be by slide,
powerpoint or video.
Themes
Dress and Performance offers many possibilities for papers on the subject
of costume. We will consider theatre from ancient to modern, opera from
Monteverdi to MacMillan, dance from classic to modern, film and television
from black and white to digital, re-enactment from woad to buckskin via
Bri-nylon.
Papers are solicited that draw on a wide variety of approaches and consider
the broadest range of issues. No restriction is placed on period, location
or nationality.
The following categories are of particular interest:
Costume - creating the character.
Design - its restraint on performance.
Period - its influence on modes, manners and posture.
Alternative - out of or in period.
Corsetry - supporting the stars.
Re-enactment - authenticity or impression.
Education - design - taught or innate.
Those wishing to present papers should submit an abstract (approx 200
words) with a short career resume by 1st November 2007. Notification will
be made to all by 1st March 2008.
Proposals will be considered by a committee chaired by the Symposium
Academic Co-ordinator, Jill Salen, Lecturer in Costume, Theatre Design, at
The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
We regret it is not possible to pay fees or expenses for contributors of
papers to the Symposium.
Abstracts with 4 copies should be sent to:
