Harvard University, Contemporary Islamic Thought and Life (Priority

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University seeks to make a
full-time professorial appointment in Contemporary Islamic Thought and Life
to be jointly situated in the Committee on the Study of Religion and the
Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. We strongly favor
making a senior appointment, but we would also consider exceptionally
qualified candidates at the assistant or associate level. The anticipated
start date for this position is July 1, 2008.
The candidate should demonstrate a deep understanding of the intellectual
and religious discourses of one or more contemporary Muslim societies in
their cultural, social, political, and historical contexts. We understand
religious and intellectual discourses in the broadest sense, including, but
not limited to, contemporary literature, theology, ritual, ethics,
political thought, and social practice. The candidate should have high
proficiency in using relevant contemporary and historical texts, including
foundational texts of the Islamic tradition, in their original languages.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach both undergraduate and
graduate students and to participate in the broader religious studies and
Islamic studies communities at Harvard.

University of Nebraska at Omaha, Middle East/Islamic Politics professor

The Department of Political Science at the University of Nebraska at Omaha
invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Middle
East/Islamic Politics. The appointment begins August 15, 2008. Best
consideration will be given to applicants who have appropriate language
skills, demonstrate promise in research, have an interest in teaching at
both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and who possesses strong
theoretical, analytical and empirical skills. Candidates are required to be
at least ABD. Preparation in a supporting subfield such as international
law, international relations, or Central Asia and PhD in hand would be a
plus. The normal workload is two to three courses per semester in addition
to research and service obligations. The successful candidate will have the
opportunity to teach courses and interact with
faculty in the newly-formed Center for Islamic Studies. The university and

Virginia Tech's Department of History invites applications for a tenure
track, assistant professor position in Middle Eastern/North African history
beginning in August, 2008, pending final administrative approval. Field of
specialization and chronological period are open. Required qualifications
include a PhD at time of appointment and an ability to
teach survey courses in world history, upper-level undergraduate courses in
Middle Eastern and/or North African history, and graduate courses on
thematic and comparative topics. Applicants should demonstrate how their
scholarship and teaching could contribute to the History Department’s
concentrations in 1) Identity Formation, 2) Knowledge Production and

the Islamic World (Priority application deadline: December 7, 2007)
The Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a
tenure-track Assistant Professor to teach introductory and upper-level
courses in the History of the Islamic World. Specialization is open but
candidates must be qualified to offer a course in the history of the modern
Middle East. Secondary field(s) should complement existing faculty
expertise. Teaching responsibilities also include a general education
course in 20th century World History. Requirements include demonstrated
excellence in teaching, a commitment to undergraduate education, and clear
evidence of scholarly potential. Preference will be given to candidates who
