Translating the Middle East
A Collection of Articles

One of the most significant characteristics of today’s world is the
blurry vision of the borders between various cultures as a result of the
seemingly symmetrical cultural interactions. Such critical theories as
Orientalism and postcolonial discourse have led to further understanding
of complex notions of borders. Questioning of fixed notions of cultures
and nations has resulted in the transparency of borders; however, the
geopolitical hierarchies of powers and such concepts as "Clash of
Civilizations" have constructed even more solid physical borders.
Translation, as one of the important forms of transnational interaction
between cultures and languages, is among the fields which need to be
explored in order to draw attention to asymmetries of cultural
interactions. This panel intends to examine this issue within the
geography of the Middle East. Papers in this panel will address a number
of questions such as: What are the overall politics of translation
between the Middle Eastern cultures as well as those cultures and the
West? In what ways are these cultures represented through translation?
What other theoretical frameworks can assist in the understanding of the
process of translation? In what ways the linguistic barriers impact
translation within the Middle East? What is the role of such issues as
gender, sexuality, class in the process of selection for translation and
representation? In what ways are the politics of reception and
translation related? What is the process and the determinant factors for
selecting the works to be translated? What role does the market play in
this context? What is the impact of cyber-space, and in general new
technical modes of communication, for translation?
Currently we are planning to publish a collection of articles which will
address these topics. Several publishers have already expressed their
interest in publishing this collection. Articles in this collection will
examine the role of translation in the ways in which cultures,
languages, identities, and images travel within and beyond the Middle
Eastern borders. Different components of this collection will
problematize the power structures that have dominated this transnational
medium by highlighting the complexities of a seemingly simple notion of
translating Middle Eastern cultures.
