Call for Papers: humanities and social
sciences University of California Riverside=E2=80=99s
Fourteenth Annual Graduate Humanities Conference

Abstract deadline: 2/16/07

Michel Foucault has said, "What frustrates me, for instance, is the
fact that the problem of drugs is always envisaged only as a problem
of freedom and prohibition. I think that drugs must become a part of
our culture." Along with those sentiments, he has said that there are
"good" drugs and "bad" drugs, and that we must study the ones that
give us pleasure. Keeping this in mind, this call is for papers that
address the topic of drug use that might be seen as something more
than abuse. What cultures in the United States might already be
following Foucault's advice? Is this drug use done in the same spirit
that Foucault suggests? Academic work that explores this topic in
films, novels, music and other medias will be welcome.
