MOVING IN A SMARTER CITY
Thursday, March 1 to Friday, March 2, 2007, Akademie Schloss Solitude,
Stuttgart, Germany
Thursday, 8 pm and Friday, 9 am to 7 pm
The symposium »Moving in a Smarter City« at Akademie Schloss Solitude is
dedicated to the question of which societal shifts cities are subject to
and which challenges need to be posed upon the mobility of tomorrow.
Even beyond industrialized nations, the postindustrial age’s foundation
lies upon multimediality, flexibility, technological and individual
information. But how do tomorrow’s »smart cities« (William J. Mitchell,
MIT) look? The times that give the city its increasingly complex and
individualized daily rhythms have evolved substantially in the last
fifteen years, creating a new idea of mobility: citizens express today
their wish for »customized« services, not only in transportation but
also in their working rhythms, their leisure time and their public
services. A few examples: the first round-the-clock nursery has just
opened in Lyon; in Stuttgart, you can listen to a concert during lunch
break; and in Zurich a barge offers accommodations to those who want to
take a nap during the day. In a very near future, public transportation
will have to be provided outside the usual times, taking into account
the connectivity with other means of transportation, linking itself to
other resources of the city, and imagining new forms and new values for
individual transportation. All these issues will be addressed during the
symposium from the 1st to the 2nd March 2007, initiated jointly by the
Akademie Schloss Solitude and the ICN Business School, Nancy in close
cooperation with Villes 2.0, Paris.
Participants of the symposium will be artists, architects and city
planners as well as representatives of institutions and companies like
Vinci Park, DaimlerChrysler, the Fondation Internet Nouvelle Génération
and others. The opening speeches on Thursday night will be given by Dr.
Wolfgang Schuster, Lord Mayor of Stuttgart and the French Sociologist
Bruno Marzloff.
The symposium will take place at Akademie Schloss Solitude. Conference
Language will be English.
