The International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) at
Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany, invites international
applications for PhD fellowships. Due to generous support from the
German Research Foundation (DFG), the GCSC can offer in 2007 up to 5 PhD
fellowships.

The GCSC encourages applicants who have graduated with excellent marks
from their home universities in one of the GCSC’s academic subjects* or
in cultural studies. Applications from the areas of Medieval and Early
Modern History and Literature, Modern and Contemporary History, Art
History, Romance Studies, Slavic Studies and Linguistics are especially
encouraged. The proposed research project should fit into one of the
GCSC’s research areas*.
Candidates must have fluency in either English or German.

PhD candidates seeking an excellent research environment will find ideal
conditions and maximum support at the GCSC, which was awarded the status
of a ‘DFG - Graduate School of Germany's Excellence Initiative’ in 2006.
The PhD fellowships include a monthly stipend of approximately €1.000
and are offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions,
each of a year. They start on October 15th, 2007.

Acceptance of a fellowship requires participation in the study programme
and the wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC, as well as active
involvement in the relevant GCSC graduate research group. PhD fellowship
holders must be registered as PhD students at Justus Liebig University
and are expected to take up residence in or near Giessen. PhD
supervisors from among the GCSC faculty may be chosen by the applicants
before or after their admission. There are no tuition fees for doctoral
students at JLU, except for an enrolment fee of approximately €200 per
semester.

To apply, please complete and submit our online application form (via
email) and send the following materials by post to the address indicated
below:
• a short CV
