announces call for participation in the Regional Workshop

Revising History of Central Asia

The Workshop will take place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on October 20-22, 2006

The Workshop aims at examining main trends in History Studies in
Central Asia and teaching History disciplines at higher education
institutions in the region. It will introduce the multifaceted debate
on the process of revision of History in Central Asia in the
post-Soviet periods with an attempt to characterize it from various
perspectives. Discussions will raise problems relating to the
formation of National History in Central Asia including such as the
interplay between History and Nation/Nationalism, History and State,
History and Identity. The workshop will also discuss one of the main
trends in the present History writing process in the region which is a
mythologization of the history. The roots of this phenomenon will be
examined on the analysis and discussion of the old and new myths in
Historiography of Central Asia. It will discuss if this phenomenon
should be considered as an inevitable element of Historiography in the
transition period that Central Asian nations go through. Along with
these issues the workshop will look at the problem of integration of
academic research in History in the teaching process in the region
with the special focus on new courses on Central Asian History such as
Intellectual History of the region.

The Workshop is designed for young university teachers and researchers
studying History of Central Asia throughout the region.
