Call for Papers: High-, Middle-, Lowbrow

A panel for the Fifth Annual Cultural Studies Association meeting at
Portland State University, April 19-21, 2007.

This panel seeks papers that explore the concept of the “brows” of taste
as they function in contemporary cultural studies. Do the brows have any
heuristic or descriptive value in the twenty-first century? Are they
more useful as a way of understanding the past? What can they help us
say about the way cultural texts build cultural capital or destroy it?
How are they linked to or separated from socioeconomic class?

Proposals for papers on any of these questions as well as related
inquiries are welcome, as are papers that will use the brows to
understand a certain literary, filmic, or popular text.

Please send a 500-word abstract and a one-paragraph biography to
hsteffen at andrew.cmu.edu by September 30, 2006.
