Department of Religious Studies, University of California at Santa Barbara

The University of California at Santa Barbara seeks to appoint a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Islamic Studies, beginning July 1, 2007.  This appointment in the Department of Religious Studies takes place within a thriving interdisciplinary community that also includes a Middle East Studies Program and a Center for Middle East Studies.

Candidates must demonstrate expertise in the classical textual traditions of Islam, Qur'an, tafsir, hadith,  along with the ability to teach these traditions and locate them within the broader context of Islamic law, philosophy, and other religious sciences from the formative to medieval periods.  Advanced expert knowledge of classical Arabic is required. Familiarity with the relations among Islamic, Jewish, and Christian intellectual traditions and an engagement with the wider field of Religious Studies and relevant theoretical approaches are also desirable.
