The University proposes to appoint a Departmental Lecturer in Ottoman History. The appointment will run for one year from 1 October 2006. Candidates should have a primary field of expertise in Ottoman history prior to the 19th century, as reflected in the Ottoman written culture of the period, including both narrative and documentary texts. Candidates should hold, or be working towards, a doctorate within this field, and be able to provide evidence of published, or soon to be published, research. An excellent command of Ottoman and modern Turkish is required. An ability to contribute to the faculty?s teaching of any of the following would also be an advantage: 19th- and 20th-century Ottoman/Turkish history; Ottoman literature; Turkish popular literature.

Candidates should be able to teach and examine Ottoman history 1300-1800, and Ottoman historical texts produced in the same period, from beginners? through to advanced level. The postholder will be required to give lectures, classes and tutorials in Ottoman History and to examine as required.
