*RE-THINKING EUROPE Literatures and Literary Histories as Media of
(Trans)National Identities and Collective Memories
*
Hermes International Seminar 2006
Leuven (Belgium), 17-23 June

The basic concern of the 2006 HERMES seminar & symposium is the question
of how literary texts, genres and forms respond to and shape processes
of European self-understanding in an epoch of global reconstruction of
regions, nations and continents. In 2004, the European Union welcomed 15
new member states. The accession of a number of Balkan states is
impending. Turkey is waiting in the wings. Transatlantic relations to
the USA are hotly debated, in politics as in matters of culture. At the
same time, linguistic, religious or ethnic dividing lines show even in
some of Europe’s oldest nation states. Is this the time to start
re-thinking Europe, also in the field of literary studies? The seminar
will explore the past, present, and future of the idea of Europe’s
literatures as sites of historically changing, dynamically interrelated
cultural formations, memories, and projections of identities, understood
nationally, regionally and supra-nationally.

The University of Leuven K.U.Leuven <http://www.kuleuven.be/>, in
cooperation with European partners from the HERMES network, is planning
an International Seminar, to be held from June 17-23, 2006 on the topic

The International Seminar is designed for highly qualified doctoral
candidates in any field of literary studies. It will offer students the
opportunity to give papers in a relaxed and productive atmosphere and
the chance for intensive discussion of their research projects.

Participants will also be invited to attend a symposium on the seminar
topic which will feature internationally renowned speakers.

The registration fee for the seminar is 200 euros. We are currently
trying to get funding to cover accommodation, meals, etc.
