Scholarships for Doctoral Study

The Max Weber Center for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies is a
specialist institution at the heart of the University of Erfurt. It is
distinguished by a unique organizational form combining the features of
a Center for Advanced Study, a Research Institute and a Graduate School.
Internationally renowned scholars from a variety of disciplines
(sociology, economics, religious studies, law, philosophy, and history)
are appointed as Fellows on a non-permanent basis. Their work
contributes to the research programme of the Center and is arranged
around the following fields:
* Religion, science and law as sources of social organization and meaning;
* Interactions between cultures, social orders and mentalities in
contexts of radical change;
* Theories of human action in the social sciences and humanities and
their bearing on normative questions, especially ethical questions.

Fellows appointed at the Center not only pursue research projects that
contribute to the core themes of the Center but also offer guidance to
doctoral candidates and to post-doctoral researchers working in similar
fields of research. Intensive supervision relationships can therefore
develop. Interaction between Fellows, doctoral candidates and
post-doctoral researchers follows the basic academic principle of
research driven by instruction and instruction driven by research.

Applications for positions of doctoral study at the Center are welcome
from holders of excellent qualifications in any of the disciplines
represented at the Center or in related disciplines. Successful
applicants for the position of doctoral candidate may register for the
awards of Dr. rer. pol, Dr. jur. or Dr. phil. according to their area of
specialization.

A work station is made available to every member of the Center.
Residence in Erfurt and attendance at the Center's seminars, workshops,
and public lectures is mandatory.

 From 1 October 2006 the Max Weber Center offers
