Dear colleagues,

The third thematic issue of the European Journal of Turkish Studies, dealing on MPs in contemporary Turkey, is now available online:
http://www.ejts.org

Since the end of the Ottoman Empire, MPs stand as the most important political figures in Turkey: the Turkish political elite is primarily composed of MPs and former MPs. This issue attempts to link two perspectives: the resources mobilized by the MPs and the way they fulfil their role. Resources are defined here as what is efficiently mobilized in the political field to win election, like a position of power inside a party, etc. Hence, the contributors do not consider the social profile of the MPs /per se/, but the actualisation of resources in the political field. Second, the concern for the effective conditions of the practice of a political mandate leads to an analysis in terms of 'social roles' and to stress the learning of behaviours according to norms considered as legitimate. As a whole, the issue addresses the professionalisation of the political field in Turkey.

>From this perspective, the papers address different issues: Cemil Koçak draws an insight into the changing meaning of being an MP during the single-party period (http://www.ejts.org/document497.html). Gilles Dorronsoro addresses the resources mobilized by MPs in the constituency of Diyarbakir and their evolution during the Republican period (http://www.ejts.org/document477.html). Focusing on some prominent fiction writers who accessed the parliament, Çimen Günay discusses the superposition of the role of a writer and a politician (http://www.ejts.org/document473.html). Ilter Turan analyses inter-party mobility in the Turkish Grand National Assembly since 1980 (http://www.ejts.org/document400.html). Canan Aslan addresses the role and strategy of the main opposition (CHP) party's MPs, their perceptions of their roles, their place in the legislative process and their relationship with their party in the 22nd legislature (http://www.ejts.org/document500.html). On the basis of data collected through a questionnaire survey, Hazama highlights several features of constituency service in Turkey (http://www.ejts.org/document471.html). Elise Massicard discusses the relationship between MPs' role orientation in Parliament and their resources (http://www.ejts.org/document499.html).

You will also find a new book review, of M. Hakan Yavuz and John L. Esposito's Turkish Islam and the Secular State: The Gülen Movement, by
Ramazan Kılınç (http://www.ejts.org/document469.html).

We wish you a satisfactory exploration of the issue and more generally of the journal. Let us remind that the EJTS, a refeered review, welcomes submissions of social science articles - also outside of the thematic issues - as well as reviews dealing with contemporary Turkey.

Sincerely,

The EJTS Editorial Board
