Call for CESS 2006 Panel- Slaves, Sovereignty, and Millenarinism in
Turkic Empires
Dear Colleagues,
This panel discusses Turkic notions of kingship and sovereignty in the
Delhi Sultanate (1210-1526) and the Mughal Empire (1526-1707). By
focusing on topics such as millenarian interconnections between Mughal
India and Central Asia, and on the formation of a Turkic slave dynasty
such as the Delhi Sultanate, this panel examines cultural links between
Central Asia and India. This panel also addresses the question of a
common vocabulary of empire across India, Iran, and Central Asia, and
the role played by travel, trade, and historiographical narrative in
producing such a vocabulary.
We currently have three papers and a panel chair, and are looking for a
discussant. Since this is a panel on India and Central Asia, there is a
range of specializations that might make you suited to be a discussant.
Knowledge of Muslim Empire in India and of cultural contacts with Iran
and Central Asia, for instance, would be ideal. Alternatively, a
grounding in Medieval and/or Early Modern Eurasian cultural history
would work too, as would a grounding in Central Asian Empire and
cultural interchange across borders. Expertise in millenarian
movements and slave trade, or in Timurid notions of kingship could also
make you a possible candidate. If interested, please reply by March
25th, with a current c.v. Feel free also to email me if you have any
questions.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Warm regards,
Taymiya Zaman
