GRANT- MPI Siberian Studies Centre Grants, Max Planck Inst., Deadline May 31

The Max Planck Institute has the opportunity to offer three positions in
the
Siberian Studies Centre:

- 2 Postdoctoral Grants,
- 1 PhD Grant.

Application Deadline: May 31, 2006

The Siberian Studies Centre conducts social anthropological research in
several regions of the Russian Federation (the North, Siberia and the Far
East of Russia). Four priority areas constitute the nexus of the
researchers' activities:

- Land use, entitlements, different meanings of land, and environmental
   perception;
- Generation and gender;
- Religion, conversion, and spirituality;
- Ethnicity and indigeneity.

Applicants should indicate the main priority area that they want to address
in their research and the region where they want to conduct fieldwork.
Project proposals for research in urban or rural fieldwork sites are
equally
welcome. The Siberian Studies Centre puts emphasis on teamwork and
grantholders will be asked to contribute to joint activities (publications,
presentations, etc.).

The Postdoctoral Grants are for 15 months (from 1 October 2006 to 31
December 2007). The possibilities for extending these Postdoctoral Grants
will be considered towards the end of 2007. Postdoctoral Grants can only be
awarded to scientists who have received their doctorate within the last ten
years. The grants are not taxed and are free from social security
stipulations.

The PhD Grant will be awarded for 2 years (starting from 1 October 2006),
with the possibility of two six-month extensions. The successful applicant
may be expected to complete a year-long period of fieldwork as part of the
studies.

Applicants should have an anthropological background and some field
experience in the Russian Federation or Mongolia. Good reading, writing and
communication skills in both English and Russian are essential. Other
language skills would be beneficial.

The Max Planck Society is committed to raising the proportion of women in
under-represented fields; we thus explicitly encourage applications by
women. Individuals with disabilities will be given priority, assuming equal
qualifications.

Applicants should include in their applications:

- a cover letter;
- a CV including a list of publications;
- a project proposal (two pages; two alternative ideas may also be
   considered);
- photocopies of university degrees (no translations needed at this stage);
- names of two or three referees, who may be contacted for letters of
   recommendation.

There is no application form to be filled out. Please send your
application to:
