WORKSHOP ON EMPIRE AND NATION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN (c. 1789-c.1989)
Chair: Professor Henry Frendo, University of Malta=20
=20
In this workshop we shall tackle the shapes and forms taken by =
nationalism in the various countries bordering on the Mediterranean Sea. =
We shall seek to cover the earlier intra-European movements such as in =
Greece and Italy as well as, especially, the stirrings provoked =
initially by the imperialist and colonizing expansion of mainland =
European powers to the South and East, or otherwise. This spectrum =
should uncover contrasting 'national' paths to independence and =
statehood within and beyond the parameters of different mainland =
European imperialisms and governance systems, interests, attitudes and =
philosophies. It could also serve critically to describe liberal as well =
as integral nationalism in historiographical terms, both European and =
Mediterranean. Papers will focus on individual countries, including =
islands and enclaves, while other presentations may consider some =
comparative perspectives or paradigms, in imperial, national or regional =
contexts. Ideally we would have at least one paper about each or most =
'Euromed' countries, or would-be countries, surrounding the =
Mediterranean basin, mostly perhaps with a linguistic-cultural, =
politico-economic or military-strategic emphasis on inter-action in the =
moulding, definition or invention of national identities and =
democracies, before and/or through the process of decolonization and the =
subsequent emergence of independent statehoods. But: what pasts? what =
futures? To what extent has the post-independence experience worked and =
how far does that relate to an earlier dynamic of tension, subjection, =
dependence, strife, influence or other maybe subtler mouldings, =
including a cultural-political dimension? Could Mediterrranean =
nationalisms, if so they may be described, be profiled in response to =
such questions? Thus another central theme would be that of attempting =
to read history backwards in attempting to understand the present, =
directly or indirectly, in the light of a country's, a neighbourhood's =
or a region's past as this evolved and changed.
=20
I look forward to welcoming and hosting you in Malta for the ISSEI =
conference and indeed for this workshop, the papers of which it is =
planned to have published as a book.=20
