Call for panels, roundtables and individual papers for the
Second World Congress for
Middle Eastern Studies
Amman, Jordan
11-16 June 2006
Deadline: 28 February 2006
Scholars, researchers, students and professionals involved in the study
of the
Middle East, North Africa and the Muslim states of Central Asia, as well as
those areas of the world directly or indirectly affected by developments in
these regions, are cordially invited to submit proposals for pre-organized
panels, individual papers and roundtable discussions for the Second World
Congress for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES-2), which will take place in
Amman,
Jordan on 11-16 June 2006.
Pre-registration is mandatory for individuals wishing to attend or
participate
in any of the academic activities associated with WOCMES-2. Congress
fees have
been discounted for scholars and experts from the developing world and
students
no matter where they are located. To find out more about fees, payment
methods
and pre-registration in general, please click on the Registration button
on the
navigation bar and choose Form 1. Like all of the forms on this website,
Form 1
may be filled in and submitted online or downloaded, printed and
submitted by
fax. Online registration is strongly encouraged in all cases.
Scholars who wish to present a paper at WOCMES-2 are urged to do so in the
context of a pre-organized panel if at all possible. The panel organizer is
responsible for submitting the panel registration form and panel/paper
abstracts
using Form 2 and may expect a response from the WOCMES-2 academic
committee on
the proposal within one month. Please note that a simple procedure has been
devised for the online submission of abstracts: information on this and on
academic standards may be found by clicking on Form 2 on the navigation
bar. Two
hours will be scheduled for each panel, which will be made up of a
chair, four
to five presenters and an optional discussant. We reserve the right to
assign a
presenter to any panel containing fewer than five persons if we receive a
relevant abstract in response to the call for individual papers.
Scholars who are not part of a pre-organized panel can still submit
abstracts
for individual papers to the WOCMES-2 academic committee using Form 3.
Papers
accepted by the committee will be grouped into panels and chairs
appointed if
they cannot be assigned to pre-existing panels.
WOCMES-2 will also facilitate a limited number of roundtable discussions
on the
current state of scholarship in a particular field, new work in progress,
problems connected to innovative approaches or models, or other questions of
broad general concern. Participants do not present papers, but share
their own
views and engage their colleagues, including members of the audience, in
an open
discussion and debate on the theme. The theme, scope and purpose of the
roundtable and the approaches of participants must be clearly defined in
outlines submitted by the organizer using Form 4. Two hours will be
scheduled
for each roundtable. For more information, please click on Form 4 on the
navigation bar.
The maximum length for all abstracts and outlines is 400 words. English
will be
the working language of the congress, with some French and Arabic.
The principal themes from the first WOCMES have been retained: Ancient
