13th Transatlantic Summer Academy (TASA), University of Bonn: "The
Changing Face
of Terrorism"

The University of Bonn invites graduate students from North America and
Europe
to participate in its 13th Transatlantic Summer Academy (TASA) from June
19 to
July 15, 2006. Each year, the four-week program focuses on one central
issue in
the fields of Transatlantic Relations and European Integration.

This year's summer academy, entitled "The Changing Face of Terrorism", will
focus on the historical roots, different manifestations and consequences of
terrorism. Since 9/11, experts, journalists and politicians speak of a
new age
of terrorism which has fundamentally changed the international security
environment. While there still is no universally accepted definition of
terrorism, the consequences seem to be straightforward: The West is
caught in a
war against terrorism and it has to win this war. But is this perception
true?
Is the so-called "superterrorism" a new phenomenon? How does this new
terrorism
change the coordinates of foreign policy? Do we need new analytical
instruments?
What implications do counter-terrorism strategies have on civil and human
rights?

TASA provides an intensive interdisciplinary program of lectures, tutorials,
panel discussions and briefings in the fields of politics, economics, law,
history and culture. Next to the seminar program in Bonn, we will visit
German
and European institutions in Berlin, Brussels, Luxembourg, and
Strasbourg and
meet high-ranking officials and politicians. The TASA faculty is made up
by a
wide range of experts from academia, government, politics, economics,
and the
media.

Students from North America and Europe with a background in International
Relations, European Studies, Political Science, History, Economics, Law, or
Cultural Studies can apply. The course is geared to graduate students
but also
open to exceptionally well-qualified undergraduates. For more information,
please consult our website at the web address shown below.
