Higher Education Management: International Trends & Local Sustainability
Organized by Westminster International University in Tashkent with the
support
of British Council, Uzbekistan and United Nations Development Program,
Uzbekistan.
Conference date - 12th May 2006
Application Deadline: April 1, 2006
Westminster International University in Tashkent invites all interested
practitioners and scholars to submit paper proposals for one day
conference on
the issues of governance and reform in higher education. Although there is a
broad consensus on the need for transition countries to move towards the
adoption of international standards and systems in higher education
there is an
ongoing debate about the nature and pace of such reform and what needs to be
done to develop the capacity to cope with change and to ensure
sustainability.
The goal of the Conference, which is supported by the Ministry of Higher and
Secondary Special Education, is to provide a forum for the discussion of key
issues relating to the reform of governance, management and delivery of
higher
education in this region the countries of which are at different stages of
political, social and economic transition and nation building.
Papers can relate to any of the following themes:
1. Governance in higher education
2. Higher education funding, entrepreneurship and the commercialization of
education
3. Teaching, learning and assessment systems and support services (IT and
learning resources)
4. Development of independent learning in higher education
5. Quality assurance in higher education
6. The Bologna Process - current state of the debate and its implications
for the region
7. Research quality and funding
8. Partnership with business and alumni relations
9. Human resource development
Paper proposals can be submitted in English, Russian or Uzbek. The British
Council, Uzbekistan, will be providing some support for outstanding paper
proposals both from the region and internationally.

The deadline for paper proposals is 1st April 2006.
A decision on the inclusion of the paper will be made by 10th April 2006.
The best papers presented at the conference will be published in the
conference
proceedings.
The conference host, Westminster International University in Tashkent, was
founded upon the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan on January
16th 2002
and delivers UK accredited degrees in business, economics, business
computing
and law. All courses are taught in English by a team of international and
foreign trained lecturers and the University works in close partnership
with the
University of Westminster, London, UK and other European Universities.
