Fourth Annual Material Culture Symposium for Emerging Scholars
Location: Delaware, United States
This annual symposium provides emerging scholars-–graduate
students from a
variety of academic disciplines--with a venue for interdisciplinary dialogue
centering on material culture. By freeing scholars from chronological and
topical restraints, we encourage discussion across perceived boundaries of
discipline, medium, and methodology. Created and organized by University of
Delaware graduate students, this symposium also provides an opportunity
for new
and established scholars to foster interdisciplinary camaraderie and
exchange
focused on object-based research.
Hosted by Winterthur Museum and Country Estate, this fourth annual event
brings
together graduate students from fields including anthropology, art history,
historical archeology, history, and American studies to present their
material
culture research. We are honored to have audience discussion periods led
by this
year’s distinguished commentators – Linda Welters, Wendy
Bellion,
and Ned Cooke. In addition, co-chairs of the Smithsonian’s Material
Culture Forum, Anne Collins Goodyear and Tia Powell Harris will present a
summary address. We invite both emerging and established scholars, as
well as
interested members of the public, to join us for an exciting day of new
scholarship.
The symposium and special tours are free. We encourage you to pre-register
online up until March 15. On-site registration will also be available at the
symposium. We require pre-registration for all special tours. Tour space is
limited, so register soon! Registration available at
