CONF./CFP- Student Ethnography Conference, March 24, Bishkek

Call For Papers

Announcement of Student Conference on Culture

Theme: 'Empirical Culture in Central Asia: Innovative Ethnographic
Studies of
Daily Life'

Where: American University - Central Asia

When: Friday, March 24, 2006

Deadline: Submit papers by March 15, 2006. Acceptance by March 20.

We invite submissions of papers for a one-day conference that will
highlight new
issues and approaches in ethnography in Central Asia. We encourage
ethnographic
research on people's lived experiences, in order to show how customs and
traditions work in practice and process. Neglected aspects of Central Asian
culture include dreams and dream interpretation, verbal practices
(blessings,
prayers, toasts, curses, announcements, suyunchu), divination (gadalka,
tolgochu), inviting the newlyweds (otqo kirguzu), jokes and anecdotes,
superstitions, work practices in the home and outside, crafts and cooking
techniques, health ideas and practices. We are asking for studies of such
practices as forces shaping people's lives. How do people explain why
they learn
and embrace certain practices and not others, and how do they discuss
them with
each other, change them and otherwise fit them into their lives? How do
practices get integrated into distinctive personal and community
repertoires?
How do people deal with social conflicts and differing demands about
practices?

We discourage papers that reify customs, traditions or practices as separate
from their contexts as parts of people's lived experience. We will also
avoid papers that speculate on the origins, evolution, or institutionalized
interpretations of such practices.

Power Point presentations with sound and images are encouraged.
