Interdisciplinary scholarly conference

"Visual anthropology: new views to social reality"
Saratov, Russia, 28-29th of July, 2006

Saratov State Technical University and Center for Social Policy and Gender
Studies (Saratov, Russia) announce the interdisciplinary scholarly 
conference
"Visual anthropology: new views to social reality" to be held on the 
28-29 of
July, 2006. This conference intends to bring together social and cultural
anthropologists, historians and sociologists, scholars in cultural studies
perspective, to discuss methods and findings of analyzing visual objects and
documtnes, which open for social scientists new perspectives to 
understanding
past and present. Photography, video and electronic media are now more 
often
used by social scientists as cultural texts, as representations of social
experience and context and cultural production. Visual methods and 
traditional
approaches (personal narratives, archival documents) can complement each 
other
as different types of knowledge, which can be experienced and represented by
various textual, visual and other sensual means.

Working languages of the conference are Russian and English.

The proposed topics for the discussion are presented but not limited by the
following list:

  - theories and methods of visual anthropology; visual methods in
    ethnography, social and cultural anthropology, sociology, cultural 
studies,
    history
  - visual image as a social and cultural text; visual representations of
    social reality
  - visual research into everyday life
  - visual narrative of the photography
  - Soviet and post-Soviet cinema: sociocultural analysis
  - a phenomenon of ethnographical film
  - issues of visual data archives

The papers selected and accepted for the conference will be published in a
collection of papers.

The application should include the following information:

11) equipment required for the presentation (over-head projector,

The applications should be received by the co-ordinators by the 4th of June,
2006.
