Panel call for papers
Women and Gender in Muslim immigrant integration in
Western Europe:
Legal and Socio-Political Aspects

Gokce Yurdakul (University of Toronto) and Galya
Ruffer (University of
Chicago)

We are planning to submit a panel to the 48th Annual
International
Studies Association Convention, Chicago, Feb 28th,
March 3rd, 2007. In
general, we aim to bring together and
interdisciplinary group of
scholars who will explore the following questions:
 > What kind of roles does gender play in the Muslim
immigrant
integration processes in Western European countries?
 > What are the social implications of legal processes
that concern
women and Muslim immigrant families?
 > How do Muslim immigrant communities react to the
legal decisions and
social policies that affect Muslim women's lives?
 > How do court rulings regarding the cultural rights
of Muslims either
challenge or reinforce gender identities?
If you would like to be considered to participate in
this panel, please
send a title and an abstract with your name and
affiliation to the
e-mail addresses below. The deadline for submitting
abstracts to this
session is April 30, 2006.
