A New Book, Female Suicide Bombers, by Rosemarie
Skaine

Rosemarie Skaine's Female Suicide Bombers, McFarland
Publishers, has
been
published. "The recent involvement of a women in the
suicide bomber
attack
in Amman, Jordan was but the latest in a growing list
of female suicide
bombers," Skaine says, "Today, female suicide bombers
are frequently
the
'weapon of choice' in an increasing number of
conflicts."

Female Suicide Bombers profiles female suicide bombers
and explains the
roles of female bombers as freedom fighters and
terrorists.
Celebrated as
liberators and martyrs by those who support their
cause, denounced as
terrorists by their opponents, suicide bombers have
become all too
common in
violent conflicts worldwide. The female suicide bomber
is a relative
newcomer to the landscapes of war, but more and more
women are being
recruited for self-sacrifice. "Rarely do suicide
bombers work on
their own,"
Skaine says, "They are part of a larger cause."

Skaine's book examines the use of female suicide
bombers by Hezbollah
during
the Lebanese civil war, the Kurds in Turkey, the Tamil
Tigers in Sri
Lanka,
the Chechen rebels against Russia, and the
Palestinians against
Israeli.
