Call for abstracts for

The Aga Khan Humanities Project's (AKHP) Panel Proposal for the Sixth
CESS Annual conference

*The State of the Humanities in **Central Asia***

* *

This panel will assess teaching and research in the Humanities in
Central Asia. Therefore, preference will be given to proposals offering
(1) a comparative perspective, (2) original research based on
qualitative and/or quantitative studies, and (3) an assessment of
current state of specific disciplines of humanities in Central Asia.
However, proposals offering case studies of departments teaching and/or
researching humanities disciplines, theoretical issues such as
definitions, debates, and discourses within Central Asian humanities, as
well as relevance of the study of humanities in contemporary Central
Asia are also welcome.

The core disciplines of the humanities, Philosophy, History, Literature,
ethnography etc, will be preferred. However, papers on associated
disciplines in the social sciences, such as sociology and psychology,
will also be considered.

The main objective of this panel is to identify the direction and trends
of the humanities discourses taking place in Central Asia and their
place in the wider international discourses in humanities. Correlative
objectives include evaluating the developmental needs of the humanities
in Central Asia, the disciplines/departments that have had some support
and the impact/outcomes of that support, and finally the prospects for
humanities in Central Asia in the near future.

Two successful applicants to this panel from Central Asia will receive a
travel grant (up to a maximum of 1000$) towards travel to the conference
from the Aga Khan Humanities Project. Grantees will need to have Central
Asian citizenship, and will be expected to submit the full text of the
paper by the due date (September 8,^ 2006). The grant will be awarded at
the CESS conference in Michigan.
