"Treating the Transnational Body: Public Health With(out) Borders"

Call for papers/presentations examining the transnational, historical, or
economic dimensions of public health and medicine. For example, Doctors Without
Borders operates from the humanitarian premise that medical care must transcend
national borders and the boundaries of war and conflict. However, other recent
public health "scares" from SARS to Super AIDS to "over population" expose the
ways public health can also be utilized to restrict movement, entrench borders,
and reinforce power hierarchies. What do these (and numerous other) examples
tell us about how medicine and human health figure in an increasingly
transnational context? Some possible questions to address in this panel include:
In what ways does a transnational context reconfigure understandings about
health/sickness, bodies, medicine, or public health? How do the "promises" and
practices of modern medicine transcend and/or fortify national borders? In what
ways are other types of borders such as race, sex, or class problematized
through the practice of public health? How is the health of imagined national
bodies regulated?

Graduate students, faculty, and experts outside American Studies are invited to
submit abstracts or works-in-progress proposals and a c.v.

Please submit proposals by 1/1/06 to
