Food and Postcolonial Studies: The Empire Bites Back

In the colonial power to make "other," food occupies an important role. The
nature of how food signifies in colonial discourse helps to make clear the
nature of imperial power. Besides signifying a means of control over bodies -
food was purposely withheld from slaves so that they did not have enough
strength to rebel - the production and consumption of food in former colonies
have become sites of colonization to the end of profiting colonial nations. The
subject of food provides perhaps the most poignant and "real" example of the
capitalist imperial take-over of former colonies by demonstrating, as a
commodity manipulated by economic and political structures, how these areas and
peoples are circumscribed within a continued system of colonization. Food
imagery in postcolonial literature also underscores the fundamental position of
the food trade in the exploitation of former colonies. However, postcolonial
literature that resists colonial power and discourse harnesses food imagery in
order to create a subversive articulation of culture and history, fighting
against the silencing work of colonialism. Papers on any of these topics or
related concerns are sought for a panel in the

possible presentation. In addition, please include info about yourself:
past/present university positions, publications or description of research, and
contact info. Papers are acceptable in English and Spanish. The proceedings of
this panel will potentially appear in a collection published by a major
scholarly press.
