CALL FOR PAPERS
Lost on Location: Questioning Culture, Religion and Identities across Turkey and the Netherlands
Graduate Student Workshop
December 14-19th, 2005 University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands
The image came of my majestic swan
With his mad gestures, foolish and sublime,
As of an exile whom one great desire
Gnaws with no truce.
Charles Baudelaire, ‘The Swan’
Over the last decades the term culture has achieved an unprecedented popularity in terms of organizing daily lives, providing ground for political mobilization, and becoming a significant analytical concept in a number of academic disciplines. The accelerating pace of the globalization process and problematization of the metanarratives of modernity have created a space in which the discourses on “authentic cultures of people” could emerge all over the world. Part and parcel of the “return to the roots” movements has been religious revivalism in both Turkey and the Netherlands. The attempts of diverse Muslim groups to achieve recognition and representation through cultural politics of difference have paved the way for challenging and negotiating ‘secular’ norms and values. These developments point to a crisis of Turkish and Dutch secular national identities in terms of representing the totality of Turkish and Dutch citizens.
Multiculturalism’s recent fall from grace in the Netherlands and ensuing debate over the compatibility of ‘Muslim identity’ with ‘Dutch norms and values’ take place concurrently with EU’s pressures on the Turkish government for introducing legal reforms that expand political rights of the minority groups. In both countries the unsettling of former certainties is influenced by transnational processes such as migration from Turkey to the Netherlands, EU integration, and traveling of signs and concepts through globalized media. These processes have been conducive to the destabilization of former identities and boundaries, together with the generation of new ones based on imaginaries that extend beyond national boundaries.
“Lost on Location” is an attempt to come to terms with recent processes in Turkey and in the Netherlands, inducing the destabilization of former boundaries between social groups and the repositioning of centers and margins that have engendered the formation and codification of new identities –secular, religious, national, subcultural, or transnational.
These significant developments have motivated us to investigate the understandings and deployments of concepts like democracy, secularism, culture, and religion in Turkey and the Netherlands, with a special emphasis on the differences stemming from the specific local contexts of the two countries. We construe multiculturalism, democracy, secularism, religion, and culture not as unproblematic categories but investigate their normative and complicated character: How are these terms constructed in relation to one another and in what ways are they employed in the constitution of majority/ minority identities? How do the Dutch and Turkish states accommodate cultural and religious difference in relation to the unitary national identity? How do different groups and individuals redefine or contest the meaning of democracy and secularism? What are the ways in which various groups appropriate the multiculturalist discourse as a strategic resource in order to ground, justify and realize their
objectives of gaining representation and achieving recognition? Do the attempts to enhance or defend cultural and religious freedoms simultaneously contribute to the homogenization and standardization of immigrant and minority groups?
The workshop consists of sessions, which will be organized thematically to allow parallel readings between the local dynamics of identity formations in Dutch and Turkish contexts. Some of the themes and affiliated issues of analysis are as follows:
Secular democracy/ liberalism and religion
Construction of a unitary religious identity by the Turkish state: laicism
Governing cultural and religious differences: the Dutch pillar system
Struggles over signifiers: ‘culture’ and ‘religion’
Politics of difference or ‘leveling of’ differences
Secularist and Islamist identity politics
Diversity within Islam
Alevi revivalism
Public space and religion: veil issue; places of worship; religious practices etc.
Education and diversity: curricula and private education
Transnational identities and belonging
Euro-Islam
The formation of allochtone (immigrant) and autochtone (native) identities in the Netherlands
Immigrant communities and media identities
European Union integration: national, cultural, and religious identities
European Union and the discourses of democracy and human rights: the local interpretations of universalisms
The six-day long workshop includes three days of sessions, which contain presentations by participating students as well as academic and non-academic guest speakers. During the last day of the workshop a final discussion is going to be organized to draw some tentative conclusions from the sessions that shall provide a starting point for the forum discussion on “Multiculturalism and the University”. In addition, a weekend program is composed to introduce the participants to different aspects and locations of ‘multicultural Amsterdam’.
The medium of language for the workshop is English. All graduate students from social sciences and humanities departments are invited to submit titled abstracts of no more than one page to the e-mail address (lostonlocation2005@yahoo.com) no later than October 15th. Abstracts should describe the argument of the presentation and the material on which it is based. Students selected for presentation will be notified by October 25th. They will be asked to submit the text of the complete presentation by November 20th. Airplane tickets and accommodation for students from abroad are going to be provided. For further information, contact (lostonlocation2005@yahoo.com).
