PANEL: Broken Bodies: The Discourse of Disability
Impairment has always been present�only recently through disability
studies are we re-conceptualizing what impairment and disability, whether
permanent or temporary, actually means. This panel seeks paper and presentation
abstracts that critically engage with disability studies discourse to reach
conclusions about what constitutes identity within disability and examine its
juxtaposition with other theoretical positions such as feminism, queer theory,
CRT, etc. Submissions from a variety of disciplines (literature, history,
philosophy, etc.) and genres (novel, film, narrative, poetry, etc.) are
encouraged. Sample topics may include issues such as: the manifestation of
depression or other mental illness in poetry, cultural inscriptions of
disability on individual or collective bodies, the concepts of masquerade and
performance in queer theory and disability, stage or film interpretations of
disability, the utilization of prosthesis to "pass" in an able-bodied world.
Paper abstracts should be no more than 350 words and submitted by November 30,
2005. Please include home and office numbers, complete mailing address, e-mail
address, professional affiliation, and AV requirements with your submission.
