The History Department at Bogazi=E7i University
cordially invites you to the conference:
NOT THE LEAST AMONG MANY: THE GREEKS AT ROBERT COLLEGE
Saturday, 19 November 2005
Rectorate Hall, Bogazi=E7i University
The purpose of this meeting is to trace down the Greek presence at the =
Robert College, both among the instructors and among the students. The =
focus on theGreek case does not constitute but only a case study, which =
aims at instigating a broader debate on the interrelation among diverse =
communities and individuals of an educational institution both in an =
imperial context and in that of a nation-state. By inviting scholars who =
themselves are graduates or they have spent even longer years as =
teaching personnel at this institution when it was transformed to =
Bogazi=E7i University, we wish to relate their own personal experience =
and academic insight to the increasing interest that we come across =
nowadays in the presence of the non-Muslim communities in the social and =
economic life of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic, an interest also =
mirrored in the university courses. Among the issues to be addressed are =
a) a comparison between the education provided at Robert College and the =
one offered at the community schools as well as the criteria upon which =
families would chose one or the other for their children, b) the =
attitude of the religious authorities vis-=E0-vis what was basically =
considered a Protestant school c) relations with the other communities =
and ties which were retained after graduation d) the role of the =
graduates within the Turkish society and abroad.=20
