CALL FOR PAPERS

The 4th seminar organized by the network project
"Cultural Studies in a Post-Soviet Context"

VISUAL CULTURE
Tallinn University, Estonia, August 25th-28th, 2005
The dynamic development of visual culture during the last decades has =
made it a major field for interdisciplinary debate and research. Visual =
studies have challenged traditional academic work in literature as well =
as in sociology, in ethnology as well as history. The undisputed role of =
visual media in society has also changed the landscape of Post-Soviet =
cultural studies. We find it timely to dedicate the fourth and final of =
our graduate seminars to the theme of visual culture.
Contributions concerning both theoretical, empirical and methodological =
issues of visual culture in the Baltic countries and Russia during the =
socialist and post-socialist periods are welcome to our Tallinn seminar. =
Themes can range from general problems (e.g., the visual component in =
issues of national identity, semiotics of visual communication, or the =
importance of literary models and intertexts in contemporary media) to =
concrete issues of visual analysis.
This will be the fourth - and last - seminar organized by the network =
project "Cultural Studies in a Post-Soviet Context", which has developed =
with support from the Nordic Council of Ministers (Nordic Grant Scheme). =
As on earlier occasions at Sodertorn University College and Helsinki =
University, the seminar is especially intended for doctoral students who =
want to present their work in progress, and for academic supervisors. =
Participants are welcome not only from the universities organizing the =
network project (University of Helsinki, European University at St. =
Petersburg, Sodertorn University College, Tallinn University) but from =
the whole Baltic Region.
We are very happy to announce two prominent and inspiring key-note =
speakers who have already agreed to join us in Tallinn: professor Fiona =
Bjorling (Lund University, Sweden) and professor Stephen Hutchings =
(University of Surrey, Great Britain). Our guests will, as during =
earlier seminars, read a lecture and take part in the discussions and =
comment on the papers presented.
=20
Doctoral students interested in participating in the seminar should send =
in an abstract of the paper no later than 10 June, 2005. The working =
language of the seminar is English. Abstracts should be sent by e-mail =
parallelly both to Irina Belobrovtseva (avenarius@hot.ee, =
venefil@tpu.ee) and Lars Kleberg (lars.kleberg@sh.se), who are also glad =
to answer any inquiries concerning the seminar. The organizers will =
inform participants about the approval of their papers by 20 June, 2005.
=20
The organizers, through the support of the Nordic Grant Scheme and other =
funds, will cover all the expenses for participating doctoral students - =
travel, lodging and meals in Tallinn during the seminar. Date of arrival =
is Thursday 25 August. As for travel expenses, participants are =
encouraged to use the cheapest possible means of transportation to =
Tallinn. Further instructions will be sent after the approval of the =
papers, and a complete program of the seminar as soon as we have =
received reconfirmation from the participants.
