MGSA Symposium Returns to Chicago in 2005
Palmer House Hilton Hotel (877-865-5321 or 312-726-7500) =
palmerhouse_rooms@hilton.com
The MGSA's nineteenth international Symposium will be held in Chicago, =
Illinois from 3-5 November 2005. In addition to offering a wide variety =
of papers on multiple aspects of contemporary Hellenic culture, =
literature, language, history, society, politics, economics and the =
arts, the Symposium's featured topics include Greece, Greeks, and =
Hellenism in the
age of transnationalism (borders, migrations and minorities); =
Greek-Ottoman history; new developments with respect to Cyprus; and an =
assessment of the MGSA and the field of Modern Greek Studies.
Symposium Highlights:
* Highly acclaimed author Olga Broumas will deliver Thursday night's =
Keynote Address. She will be reading her own poetry as well as from her =
translations of modern Greek poetry. The poetry reading will be =
followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.
* The Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center, the nation's only museum of =
its kind, will present an exhibit that takes a historical look at the =
lives of Chicago's early Greek immigrants, their relations with other =
immigrant groups, and the community's close association with Jane =
Addams' famed Hull-House.
* Guided tours of the Classical Greek collection at the renowned Chicago =
Art Institute will be led by Dr. Jennifer Tobin, University of =
Illinois-Chicago.
* In collaboration with the Chicago Greek Film Festival, the Gene Siskel =
Film Center and The Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center, Kyriakos =
Katzourakis' docu-drama, The Way to the West (O Dromos pros tin Dysi), =
will be screened. Winner of the coveted FIPRESCI award, this innovative =
docu-drama documents the life of Irina, a woman from the former Soviet =
Union, who comes to Greece in search of a better life and falls victim =
to sex slave trafficking. Through a series of personal confessions, her =
story unfolds, implicating and critiquing the current immigrant and
refugee situation in a country that plays a strategic role in migration =
as a "waiting room" on "the way to the West." Director Kyriakos =
Katzourakis will attend the screening and will participate in a =
question-and-answer session with the audience. A reception will follow =
the event.
Symposium Logistics:
This intellectually stimulating conference will be held in the Chicago =
Loop, the city's vibrant business and cultural center. The Symposium =
will be located at the historic and elegant Palmer House Hilton, North =
America's longest continually operating hotel and famous for its lobby's =
Beaux Arts ceiling, which was recently restored by a Florentine artisan =
known for his work on the Sistine Chapel. Centrally located and easily =
accessible by public transport from both of
Chicago's airports, the Palmer House is within walking distance of the =
city's most popular attractions: its world-renowned Art Institute, the =
Ford Center for the Performing Arts-Oriental Theatre, the Chicago =
Cultural Center, the critically acclaimed Chicago Symphony Orchestra at =
Symphony Center, the Lyric Opera, and Millennium Park with its Frank =
Gehry-designed bandshell. In and around the Loop are some of Chicago's =
finest restaurants and blues clubs, and the city's world-famous =
Greektown is only a short walk away.
The Palmer House is easily reached by train, shuttle bus, or taxi from =
both of Chicago's airports. CTA (El) trains run from both airports to =
within a block of the hotel. Take the Orange Line from Midway to the =
Adams station or the Blue Line from O'Hare to the Monroe station. CTA =
fare is $US1.75 per trip. More information on Chicago public =
transportation, including trains, is available at =
www.transitchicago.com. Shuttle bus service from Midway and O'Hare =
airports to the Palmer House is provided by Continental Airport Express =
($US18 one-way from Midway, $US23 one-way from O'Hare). Shuttle =
reservations and more information are available at
www.airportexpress.com. Taxi service is also available. Fares from =
O'Hare to downtown Chicago are approximately $US40 and from Midway to =
the Loop approximately $US30.
To make reservations at the Palmer House Hilton, located at 17 E. Monroe =
Street, Chicago, IL 60603, participants should call 877-865-5321 or =
312-726-7500 (or email palmerhouse_rooms@hilton.com) and request the =
reduced Modern Greek Studies Association room rate
of $US159.00 plus tax (both single and double occupancy). Those =
conference attendees wishing to
share a room with others are encouraged to utilize the MGSA listserv =
(mgsa-l@uci.edu) in order to make connections with others wishing to do =
the same. Please bear in mind that the number of rooms available at the =
special conference rate will be limited, and we therefore strongly =
encourage you to make your reservations as soon as possible. In order =
to insure that the Association receives a discounted meeting room rate, =
a minimum number of guest rooms must be
filled. Therefore all conference participants are strongly encouraged =
to make hotel eservations at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel.

Global Indigenous Media: Cultures, Practices, and Politics:
We are seeking contributions to a collection that will address the role of
indigenous media in societies around the world, with particular emphasis
on the
ways in which the increased access by indigenous peoples to new media
technologies for production and distribution of media work has raised the
profile of indigenous aesthetic perspectives and cultural/political
issues both
in the mainstream and in new venues for indigenous media expression. This
collection will pay careful attention to the diversity of this expression by
incorporating discussions of the full range of production: feature film,
documentary, video art, multimedia works, television programs, radio
broadcasts,
internet activism, and journalism. Clearly, growing international and
national
support has multiplied the outlets for cultural expression: combating
discrimination, preserving indigenous cultures and environments, and
advocating
for cultural rights, such as the right to one's own language, protection of
indigenous traditional knowledge and sufficient provision of resources to
indigenous peoples and their media to promote indigenous language use.
Given the expansiveness of the category of indigenous media, we would
like to
encourage contributions that think across the divides of geographies,
technologies (film, television, radio, internet), cultures, and politics.
Moreover, we would like this collection to reflect the
interdisciplinarity of
indigenous media studies. We thus welcome contributions from Native American
studies, cinema and television studies, visual anthropology, cultural
studies,
art history, journalism, and communication. We will include historical
research,
local case studies, interviews with producers, cross-cultural
analyses, international perspectives, as well as metacritical work.
Submitted essays will be grouped in the following sections:
* Histories
* Contemporary Practices, Technologies, Industries, & Politics
*Producers—Interviews, Manifestos, Portraits and Monographs

Subject: [Discussion] Spaces of Identity on War Criminality
Message-ID: <429B394A.5060601@cstgroup.org>
Dear readers. The special issue of the Spaces of Identity on War
Criminality is
available on line (at the web address provided below).
This issue takes us on a journey from WWII Ukraine, across the bloodied
landscape of the former Yugoslavia to the seemingly distant but televisually
close land of the Chechens. It is also a journey through time: from the
camps in
which victims’ last breaths slipped away at the point of a
soldier’s
bayonet to the eerie silence of a hi-tech war room in a desert.
We are enormously pleased to have John-Paul Himka’s article appear
in this
issue. Doubly so because of the topic he chose to address: the
unwillingness of
the Ukrainian diaspora to acknowledge crimes committed during WWII.
While the
issue of any given diaspora and its selective memories of the past is
inherently
sensitive and politically charged, we are glad that such a black box is now
open.
James Sadkovich’s contribution also tackles a sensitive theme: the
politically motivated misrepresentation of the past in Bosnia and
Herzegovina.
Sadkovich successfully and forcefully dismantles the myth of Bosnia
always being
a multicultural paradise, thus, countering the claims of modern-day
transitilogists and ‘grantoid’ organizations in the region. His
article also sheds a new light on the manner in which the dissolution of the
former Yugoslavia could be analyzed.
Srdja Pavlovic’s contribution also addresses the dissolution of
the former
Yugoslavia. More specifically, it analyzes the 1991 siege of the
Croatian city
of Dubrovnik and raises the question of personalization of
responsibility for
crimes committed as the necessary point of departure in the process of
reconciliation in the former Yugoslavia.
W. Andy Knight & Tanya Narozhna present a powerful account and analysis of
war-torn Chechnya and the ruthless way this war has been waged by the
Russian
government. By highlighting issues of extra-judicial executions, forced
disappearances, murder, rape and torture, their article emphasizes grave
breaches of the Geneva Conventions and of other horrendous violations of
international humanitarian law.
Lise Hogan and William Anselmi graciously accepted our invitation to reflect
more philosophically on war. Their series of “interventions”
address
war as part of our common imaginary and the way language and image help
dehumanize and sanitize it for the general public.
Pages of our journal will be open to your comments and reactions.

Subject: [Discussion] The "Third World" Now - Institute for Advanced Study Fellowship
Message-ID: <429B3971.3070801@cstgroup.org>
Institute for Advanced Study School of Social Science Fellowships 2006-07
Location: New Jersey, United States
Fellowship Deadline: 2005-11-15
Each year the Institute for Advanced Study's School of Social Science in
Princeton, New Jersey, invites fifteen to twenty scholars to spend an
academic
year in residence as Visiting Members, pursuing their own research. It
welcomes
applications in economics, political science, law, psychology,
sociology, and
anthropology. It encourages social scientific work with an historical and
humanistic bent and also entertains applications in history, philosophy,
literary criticism, literature, and linguistics. A completed doctorate or
equivalent is required of all applicants; memberships are awarded at
both the
junior and senior levels. Member awards are funded by the Institute for
Advanced
Study and other sources, including the National Endowment for the
Humanities.
The theme for 2006-07 is The "Third World" Now. The last sixty years
have seen a
dramatic change in the shape of the world. Colonial empires have dissolved
either violently or peacefully and a new international system has taken
shape.
From the original 42 members of the League of Nations, the United
Nations has
grown to 191. In many states founded by charismatic spokesmen for national
liberation there are now a second generation of more managerial types.
And there
is a different, volatile configuration of alliances and antagonisms
among them.
There have been many studies over the years of such matters as the
modernization
and development of emerging economies postcolonial culture and politics,
ethnic
rivalries within and among nations, and post-Cold War realignments. Most
such
studies have been conducted within the context of "globalization," and
have used
categories of analysis that, in the light of recent history, appear
dated and
inadequate to the task. What is lacking, and what we are hoping to
provide, is a
map of structure, and form. Such a map requires not only empirical work
(from
historians, ethnographers, political economists, geographers,
sociologists), but
new and revised categories of analysis that will illuminate the patterns
that
have emerged. We want to bring together a group of scholars from all
over the
world whose individual work (substantive and focused as well as theoretical)
will contribute to the drawing of this map and who collectively will
articulate
the analytic categories that can make sense of the "third world" as it
is now.
(Please note that applications that do not fall within the parameters of the
theme for 2006-2007 will also receive full consideration.)
