OUT OF BOUNDS: SPACE, PLAY, AND BORDERS
University of Virginia's
Fourteenth Annual English Department Graduate Conference
April 22-23, 2005

Keynote Speaker:

SUSAN STANFORD FRIEDMAN
Virginia Woolf Professor of English and Women's Studies
University of Wisconsin - Madison

How do literary criticism and theory think beyond boundaries, be they
methodological, disciplinary, cultural, spatial or textual? How do
literary texts engage in border-crossing and play? This conference will
examine a range of issues pertaining to literal and figurative
boundaries, including cross-cultural encounters, performativity,
hybridity, and other forms of transgressive play. We encourage proposals
addressing but not limited to:

- positionality and situatedness
- methodological and theoretical crossings (e.g. postcolonialism and
feminism)
- intercultural exchange and hybridity
- "home," travel and migration
- narratives of encounter
- roots/routes
- identity construction and Otherness

Please send abstracts of up to 300 words to ams4rf@virginia.edu with
"Conference Proposal" in the subject line (no attachments please!).
Deadline: April 1, 2005
