CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
3 POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS
The Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin's Working Group Modernity and Islam
invites scholars to apply for three postdoctoral fellowships.

In 2005-2006 the thematic emphasis will be on CIRCULATING GENRES:
LITERATURE, HISTORY AND THE POLITICS OF TRANSLATION

Since the early 19th century, new literary and historical genres have
emerged in the Middle East. These new forms have usually been positioned
within Europe-centered genealogies that privilege elite cultural
narratives while obscuring the complexity of textual and intellectual
itineraries. As a result, popular syncretic texts and movements have
been excluded from canonical literary and cultural history. Against
teleological approaches to these histories, the fellowships are intended
to serve comparativist approaches to literary and historiographical
genres that eschew the limitations of area studies and aim to situate
their disciplinary concerns within broader transregional and
intertextual contexts. A special emphasis should be placed on the
comparative aspects of exchanges, links, transfers and the
transportability of genres and discursive constructs across national and
cultural borders.

PREREQUISITES FOR APPLICATION
The fellowships are intended above all for scholars of cultural studies,
literature and history from the Middle East who want to carry out their
research projects in connection with the Berlin project. Fellows of the
Working Group Modernity and Islam gain the opportunity to pursue
research projects of their choice. In Berlin, they will be integrated in
a university or non-university research institute. Fellows will receive
a monthly stipend of EUR 1,800 (supplement for married Fellows: EUR 250)
and are obligated to work in Berlin and to help shape the
project-related seminars and working discussions. As a rule, the
fellowships begin on 1 October 2005 and end on 31 July 2006. The
applicant's doctorate should have been completed no earlier than 1997.
An application consists of a curriculum vitae, a 2 to 4-page project
sketch, a sample of scholarly work (maximum 20 pages from an article,
conference paper, or dissertation chapter) and two names of potential
referees (no letter of recommendation required). It should be submitted
in English and received by *30 April 2005*.

The Working Group Modernity and Islam, an interdisciplinary research
network of the federal state of Berlin, is striving to tie regional
studies more closely to other disciplines. To ensure the inclusion of
non-European experiences and perspectives, the Working Group seeks
closer cooperation with researchers from non-European regions. Germany's
Federal Ministry for Education and Research is funding the fellowships.
