"Writing Images" (MSA, 4/15/05; 11/3-6/05)
This panel, to be proposed for the Modernist Studies Association
conference in Chicago, IL (3-6 November 2005), examines modern
combinations of visual imagery and the word, and modes of pictorial
storytelling such as the graphic novel or narrative collage. Artists
effectively =93write the image=94 in canvases and murals incorporating
paratextual information, =93wordless=94 pictorial sequences designed with=
a
narrative purpose, dialectical montage, and picture-based narrative in
department store catalogues, comics, newsreels, =93city symphonies,=94 ma=
ps,
and/or other media aimed at the modern spectator. This panel seeks to
link visual/sensory studies, art historical and literary criticism, and
theories of modernity.
Theoretical and historical readings of pictorial storytelling,
sequential imagery representing race/class/gender/nation, and the
changing relationships between the popular picture and the avant-garde
work of art are welcome. So are analyses of propaganda and commodity
fetishism; the economics of artistic/literary production and
consumption; and the relationship between sensory perception,
creativity, and technological innovation as expressed in the visual-
verbal image.
