Proposed panel: Modernism and the Historical Sense
Recent criticism has attempted to overcome the notion of modernism as
"ahistorical" by situating modernist works of art in relation to empire,
mass culture or the marketplace. This panel seeks to reflect on this
scholarly trend using the historiographic views of the modernists
themselves, whether explicitly stated or implicit in their art. What
kind of historiographic practice does modernism seem to sanction or
recommend? What is the relationship between our own historicizing modes
and those of the modernist period? To what extent are contemporary
historicizations implicated in their own versions of ahistoricity?
