[Discussion] CFP: Public and Private in Urban Spaces (5/2/05; NYMASA, 10/29/05)

The New York Metro American Studies Association (NYMASA) is seeking
abstracts and papers for our annual one-day conference, whose theme
this year will be =93Public and Private in Urban Space,=94 to be held at
Hunter College, CUNY on Saturday October 29th, 2005.

In imagining this conference we would like participants to engage with
any of the following issues:

Bodies in urban space
Neighborhoods
Domestic spaces
Transit and transportation
Borders and boundaries
Shopping and eating in the city
Memorials, monuments, and museums
Politics of urban development
Urban subcultures
Urban arts and cultural production
Production of urban identities and ethnicities
The city in and/or versus the nation
Segregation and discrimination
Representing the city (music, film, visual arts etc)
Work and play, labor and leisure
City as destination
Loving the city, having the city
Changing uses of urban space
The planned city and the improvised city

We particularly encourage submissions that discuss urban spaces before
the 20th century, and presentations that cross historic and
disciplinary borders.

Please submit proposals (250 words maximum) by Monday May 2nd to Sarah
