CONF.- Civil Society in the South Caucasus & Central Asia, Oct. 2005, London

Civil Society in the South Caucasus and Central Asia: Bridging Research and
Practice

Specialist Workshop

Centre for Civil Society
London School of Economics
London, United Kingdom

Thursday, 20 October 2005
9:30 am-5:00 pm

The Centre for Civil Society at LSE will host a one-day specialist
workshop on
Civil Society in the South Caucasus and Central Asia: Bridging Research and
Practice. The workshop will present a forum for academic researchers and
practitioners to share their latest research and thinking on civil
society in
the region. The papers will focus on the associational and communal
manifestations of civil society in a comparative perspective in post-Soviet
countries of the South Caucasus and Central Asia. A better understanding of
civil society in the region and the refinement of the concept of civil
society
has not only an academic but also a practical relevance. Strengthening the
bridge between empirical research and policy design and implementation
in the
region is critical. Donor support for various civil society and community
development projects and programmes in the region is growing. Meanwhile,
enormous gaps in our understanding of the region's formal and informal
institutions clearly remain. The presenters will address some of the
complexities of societies in the region, and the extent to which the
concept of
civil society can be usefully applied to their political, social and
cultural
context. The workshop will focus on the role of international donors in
shaping
civil societies in the region, and the implications of donor
interventions for
social, economic and political processes in the region.

A more detailed programme will be available in August.

The event is open to all, but a booking is required.
