SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN CINEMA STUDIES
Call for Papers for Graduate Conference
Shades of Sexuality in Film; Exploring the "Aberrant," the "Normal," and the
Space Between.
The Graduate Program in Cinema Studies at San Francisco State University
wishes
to announce a call for papers. Shades of Sexuality will be a graduate
conference
focusing on the evolving depiction of sexuality in film and digital
media. This
conference has a two-fold aim: to examine the history of sexuality's
manifestation on film and to appraise the current relation between sex
and its
simulation, interpretation and evaluation within today's media
landscape. With
media-depicted sexuality taking more explicit forms than ever before,
the need
for extensive discourse on the converging paths of sexuality and visual
media
has willed this conference into existence.
Shades of Sexuality wishes to emphasize an interactive and multi-media
format of
presentation and discussion. Presenters are encouraged to employ visual
media as
it pertains to their discussion of cinema and sexuality.
Presentations will be limited to twenty minutes (including media clips), and
will be organized into thematic panels, including up to four presenters.
Each
panel will be followed by an all-participant collective discourse.
Following is a list of suggested panel topics. Papers focusing on other
topics
will also be considered. For a panel suggestion, please contact the
Conference
organizers.
Suggested Panels
Genre; the function of sex in a particular genre. Examples include Sex and
Horror Films, or Sex and School.
The Aberrant Versus the Normal; The construction of sexuality. Examining the
filmic presentation of sexualities perceived by society as either deviant or
abnormal. Topics may include such themes as incest, pedophilia, and S&M.
Pornography; the changing definition, location, and consumption of
pornographic
content--including the blurring between art house and porn.
Sex in the mind--as expressed on film: the outer expression of the inner
desires, as glimpsed through fantasy and role play; as perceived through
psychoanalysis and biology: all through the prism of the camera.
Reality and Sex; The move beyond pure simulacra towards a new
hyper-reality of
stimulation.
Society, sex and its media: the mutating relations between sexuality and its
socio-political applications and implications. Politics, religion and
film: the
three horsemen of the culture war.
Gender: exploring the blurred lines of gender roles/expectations
