A CALL FOR PAPERS (Deadline September 1, 2005; journal issue)
Much of contemporary academic debate is focused on the difficulty in
representing trauma, as well as the undeniable need to find a way to
communicate
such experience. Scholars such as Cathy Caruth have noted that the
traumatized
individual is unable to witness him or herself at the moment of violent
breach.
Therefore, traumatic experience cannot be easily understood, and yet,
paradoxically, it must be articulated. Present day concerns seem to
focus in on
the problematic representation of horrific experiences such as slavery, the
Holocaust, and the attack of September 11, 2001.
The Connecticut Review is soliciting original work ranging from academic
articles, translations, short stories, plays, poems, interviews and art
for an
upcoming special issue devoted to this study of trauma. In dedicating an
issue
to such an expansive topic, The Connecticut Review hopes to compile both
personal and academic responses addressing such issues as the modes of
transmission and lived experience of traumatic history, traumatic memory,
literary representations of trauma, and the ethics of representation to
further
the discussion on art's role in communicating the experience of trauma.
Send work (essays formatted in MLA style and no longer than 20 pages) to
Editor-The Connecticut Review, English Department, Willard Hall, Central
Connecticut State University, New Britain, CT 06050. Works may also be
submitted electronically to stephcherolis@comcast.net.
