Call for proposals for a Special Session, "Captive Audience," for MLA
2005 in Washington, DC from December 27-30, 2005. Proposals due March 1.

I am seeking papers for a Special Session at the Modern Language
Association on literary and cultural representations and conceptions of
zoos that consider what roles zoos play in the lives of animals, humans,
nations, and global relations. Topics might include changing historical
perceptions of zoos; human and animal interaction at zoos; fictional or
film or other visual interpretations of zoos; attempts to "explain"
animal behavior through the creation of narrative; conceptions of
"Nature," empire, primitivism, exoticism, conservation, and
anthropomorphism in relation to zoos, among other topics.

Although MLA sessions generally focus on literature, the broader
interest in cultural and theoretical understandings of subjects under
study leaves plenty of room for proposals from fields distinct from but
in conversation with literary study.

Please send your 200-400 word proposal and a two-page vitae to Teresa
Mangum (<mailto:teresa-mangum@uiowa.edu>teresa-mangum@uiowa.edu or
English Department, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 5224) by March 1.
Thanks for your interest.
