There is still time to register for our "Furthering the Globalization
Debate" conference scheduled for Montreal, from 27th April until 1st
May. The deadline is *1st February 2005.* The Canadian Council of Area
Studies and Learned Societies (CCASLS) will hold this first ever joint
Area Studies conference encompassing all of its four regional
associations, with the support of the Canadian Association for Studies
in International Development (CASID).
For details and applications, go straight to our website:
http://ccasls.concordia.ca/2005/conf-en2005.htm
This will be a two-tier conference, with forums designed to highlight
current academic contributions in African Studies, Asian Studies, Latin
American and Caribbean Studies, and Middle Eastern Studies, along with a
special venue for cross-area research that is thematically relative. The
theme for the conference is "Furthering the Globalization Debate: Cross
Regional Comparisons". Scholars and students are invited to submit
papers that are conducive to either a regional area, or a cross-regional
theme.
The keynote address for the Conference will be delivered by Dr Ann Laura
Stoler, Chair of Anthropology and Distinguished Professor of
Anthropology and Historical Studies at the New School University. Dr
Stoler's work on empires and postcolonial studies, on race and culture,
on sexuality and imperial power, has been critical in advancing our
understanding of the colonial encounter. Her work transcends disciplines
and geographical borders. Her books include Capitalism and Confrontation
in Sumatra's Plantation Belt, 1870-1979 (1985), Race and the Education
of Desire: Foucault's History of Sexuality and the Colonial Order of
Things (1995) and Carnal Knowledge and Imperial Power: Race and the
Intimate in Colonial Rule (2002). Forthcoming works are Tense and Tender
Ties: Race and Empire in North American History and Along the Archival
grain: Colonial Cultures and Their Affective States.
Our themes are:
Theorizing the Integration of Area Studies
Capitalism and the New World Order
Historicizing Globalization
Social Inequality and Social Cohesion
Health, Disease and Society
Globalization and the International Division of Labour
National and Cultural Sovereignty
Cross-regional, cross-disciplinary and with an appeal to those both
inside and outside the academy, "Furthering the Globalization Debate" is
an exciting initiative designed to broaden the horizons of international
scholarship. Please join us in the vibrant, historic city of Montr=E9al i=
n
the Spring.
