SHADES OF INFINITE WORLDS: COMICS AND THE FANTASTIC
MYTILENE, LESVOS, GREECE, 20-22 MAY, 2005
The Department of Cultural Technology and Communication of the
University of the Aegean (www.aegean.gr/culturaltec), in collaboration
with the Iconotopia Group for the Theoretical Study of Comics, is
organizing Greece's 1st International Conference on Comics. The
successful organization of the earlier academic event, "Comics: A
Creative Journey between Imagination and Reality", held in Mytilene on
the 10th and 11th of May, 2003 (an event combined with an exhibition by
Greek comics artists), established the viability of Comics Studies in
Greece at an academic level.
Our 1st International Conference on Comics has been given the general
title "Shades of Infinite Worlds: Comics and the Fantastic", and will be
dealing with all aspects of the fantastic (fantasy, science fiction,
horror, etc) within the realm of the Ninth Art.
Therefore, we are extending an open call for papers for the conference,
as well as an open invitation to creators who would like to participate
in the accompanying exhibition with an original sample of their work.
The thematic areas of the conference are:
* Cosmogonies: The Making of A Universe (The creative process. Focus on:
the methods of individual creators, the creation of individual stories,
and methodologies for the creation of fantastic worlds).
* Rhapsodies for the Converted and the Uninitiated (The reception of
comics of the fantastic by mainstream audiences, 'fans', and cultural
industries).
* Interpreting the Cosmic Riddles (The interpretation of comics of the
fantastic. Theoretical readings, analyses of individual works).
* Parallel Worlds (The cultural influence of comics of the fantastic.
Links with literary science fiction and fantasy, adaptations in the
visual media (cinema, TV, electronic games, etc), the influence of
comics in the development of contemporary visual art, comics and new
technologies, interaction of comics with the cultural spectrum).
