Call for Papers

Throughout overcoming the longitudinal processes of transformations, the =
countries of East Central Europe have been experiencing continual =
success of populism.  At the same time, populism also attracts people =
living in the Western democracies. In this regard populism is not =
exclusively an "eastern European" phenomenon, but rather links the west =
and east of Europe together.=20

=20

The main aim of the conference is to examine populism as a global =
phenomenon that appears in every society due to sustaining clashes of =
'traditional' and 'non-traditional' structures and cultures and the =
instrumentalization of these clashes in politics. One of the goals is =
also to avoid utilization of the simplifying notions of populism in a =
scientific discourse as well as to offer a kind of synthesis in terms of =
more overreaching characteristics. The conference is supposed to provide =
scholars from various fields, including for instance, political science, =
social anthropology/ethnology or sociology, a place for a discussion =
about different case studies, theoretical concepts and characteristics =
of populism, as well as about their practical implications, particularly =
in countries of East Central Europe that entered the European Union on =
May 1st, 2004. Some wider European and non-European perspectives are, =
however, welcomed as well.=20

Proposed topics for panel discussions are following:=20

  2.. Populism as an ideology or as a political style?
  3.. Populism and its national characteristics
  4.. Populism and social transformations
  5.. Populism as a political movement

The output of the conference will be the Spring 2005 issue of the =
semi-annual Slovak Foreign Policy Affairs journal.
