*Great Lakes History Conference 2005: "World History in the 21st Century"*
Call For Papers: Great Lakes History Conference,
"World History in the 21st Century," October 28-29, 2005
The 30th annual Great Lakes History Conference, sponsored by Grand
Valley State University, will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on
October 28-29. All fields of history are invited to submit proposals
related to this year's theme, "World History in the 21st Century." Our
two keynote speakers are leading specialists in world history: Professor
Jerry Bentley from the University of Hawaii (formerly President of the
World History Association and author of Traditions and Encounters: A
Global Perspective on the Past), and Professor David Christian from San
Diego State University (founder of 'big history' and author of Maps of
Time). In addition to presenting lectures on issues in world history,
Professors Bentley and Christian will also lead workshops and roundtable
discussions where audience participants can discuss themes related to
the scholarship and teaching of global history with these leading scholars.
In addition, we welcome papers and arranged sessions addressing this
year's topic. Suggested topics include teaching world history, theories
and approaches, historiography, research and methods, interdisciplinary
approaches (for example environmental and earth sciences, anthropology,
sociology and psychology), war and violence, genocide, environmental
issues, medicine, economics and other fields of expertise. Sessions will
last 90 minutes. Papers must take no longer than 30 minutes in a
two-paper session or 20 minutes in three-paper sessions. If you are
interested in presenting a paper, please send an abstract of
approximately 200 words and a curriculum vitae by *May 15, 2005.* Please
include your address, email address and phone number. Those interested
in commenting on a session should send a c.v. and indicate areas of
expertise.
Conference headquarters will be at the L.V. Eberhart Center of Grand
Valley State University in downtown Grand Rapids. Hotel accommodations
will be available at the Days Inn of Grand Rapids, which is across the
street from the Eberhart Center. The conference is within easy walking
distance of museums and restaurants. Grand Rapids is served by most
major and regional airlines.
Registration and program information will be sent in the summer.
