5th Annual CRAFT, CRITIQUE, CULTURE Conference
Reading Readers/Reading Cultures
April 8-10, 2005

CRAFT, CRITIQUE, CULTURE is an interdisciplinary conference focusing on
the intersections between critical and creative approaches to writing
both within and outside the academy. This year=92s conference will examin=
e
the ways in which culture, in any of its aspects=97products, works, forms=
,
behaviors, institutions, etc.=97is produced, distributed, manipulated,
interpreted, and consumed. The conference encourages inquiry from a
range of disciplines throughout the humanities and social sciences. We
invite the submission of critical, theoretical and original creative
work in a variety of media (including film, video, music, writing,
visual art, artists=92 books, etc.). This year=92s conference highlights
will include a keynote presentation by Duke University=92s Frances Fox
Professor of Literature, Janice Radway and the University of Iowa=92s
English Professor, Garrett Stewart.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
=95 Communities of readers
=95 Cultures as texts (and critiques thereof)
=95 Popular culture and reader revisions/rewriting (slash, fanfic, =09
etc.)
=95 Reader response and reader practices
=95 Influence of the marketplace: censorship, editing, advertising,
etc.
=95 Adaptation, transformation, & distortion
=95 Translation and cultural reproduction
=95 Text and image
=95 Cultures of collecting
=95 Authorship and publishing
=95 Fakes and frauds
=95 Libraries and museums: cultural capital, public access, politics
of space, preservation
=95 Digital cultures, digital texts
=95 Space, place, and geography
